vocabulary is the ceiling
Vocabulary is a side-effect of domain expertise. As you devote time & energy to study & understand a domain, from core concepts to deeper mechanics, you acquire language to describe what you know with precision.
Having the language is especially relevant in the age of generative tooling, where the resolution of your output is bounded by the resolution of your input. Your words are the interface to the agents. Domain expertise raises the ceiling on what you can extract, because it raises the precision of what you can ask for.
Even if you could generate without describing — by iterating and picking — you still need to recognize great output when it appears. That recognition is also a product of domain knowledge. Someone without it can tell when something feels off but can't name it, which means they can't correct toward it. Someone with the vocabulary can diagnose & steer.
If you have the vocabulary, you are able to compress complex understanding into precise & dense language, rather than approximation. Your prompts stop being fuzzy descriptions & start being precise instructions. The generative tool doesn't need to infer your intention — you narrow the gap of interpretation.
The risk we're facing today is, if the production layer is automated, then people stop going through the effortful process of acquiring vocabulary. You used to have to grind through manual & mechanic work, struggle with the actual execution. And that's where the vocabulary got built. If you skip it, you arrive at the generation tool without the knowledge depth that makes it useful. The shortcut is undermining what the shortcut is requiring.
The uncomfortable implication here is that you still need to go deep — there is no shortcut to understanding. The ceiling stays high because precise language is rare. Not because people lack access to language, but because language is earned. You can't download the vocabulary without downloading the understanding that gives it weight.
The ceiling is the vocabulary. saying exactly what you want and recognizing when you have it. You can only accumulate it through the long process of domain immersion. The process most people are trying to skip.
